Brief description of the work:
In the ever-evolving world of environmental issues, the ability to understand and predict the stability and bioavailability of heavy metals contaminants in mine waste is increasingly becoming more important. Using x-ray absorption spectroscopy, it is now possible to quantify metal oxidation states and observe subtle changes in the crystallinity within a mine tailing as a function of any physical parameter without damage to the sample and thereby lead to a better understanding of the impact that heavy metals make on the ecosystem.
