Brief description of the work:
I use EXAFS to study a wide variety of issues in the area of polymer physics. My most extensive studies have been on ionomers, which are polymers containing a small amount of acid functionality partially neutralized with a metal cation. These materials have an annual production volume of in the neighborhood of 300 million pounds a year and are found in such items as golf-ball covers and food packaging. I have also done extensive work on polymer electrolyte systems; i.e. the type of system that could be used as a membrane separator in batteries. Finally, the other area that I have recently begun working in is trying to understand local changes that occur as a polymer goes through it's glass transition.
